In our journey as artists we are often confronted with a choice:  Continue on as we have, or try something different to get out of the rut.  One cannot argue that the latter is the best road but it takes courage… or sometimes a push from behind.  Pushing yourself is what this workshop is all about. Finding something to paint is easy… it’s what one does with the materials to interpret that subject that makes a painting sing!

"Stepping Over the Line" is designed to build confidence in the exploration of new ways to approaching painting.  It is primarily for oil painters but acrylics can also benefit from the approach.  I will be doing short, quick demos/exercises and the students will go immediately into the same exercise.  Repetition of quick studies will give confidence to do work faster and more efficiently.  Painting is sequential…painting one, then painting two, and so forth.  Painting number 20 doesn’t come until there are 19 before it.  The more we do the better we will get.

There will be demos, exercises, videos, and lots of one-on-one instruction.  We'll be working from photos all tailored to build upon your current knowledge base to make you a better painter.  Our goal is to build your toolbox of knowledge by exposing you to things you may have never seen or experienced.

This is a two-day workshop. You may work in oil or acrylic. We will be working from photographs that Lon will provide.

Lon will be urging you to work with a more instinctual approach. Don't be surprised to find yourself painting at a crazy pace, and be prepared to paint at least 10 to 15 paintings during the two-day workshop. Through out the workshop Lon will also be discussing drawing, composition, value, color theory, working with oil and acrylic paint, brush work, prepping surfaces, and alternate painting methods.

Class size limited to 10. This will allow for plenty of individual instruction.  Lon will do several demos highlighting his unique approach to making a painting.

All levels of experience are welcomed.  Projects will be tailored to each student’s capabilities.

Students will be responsible for their own materials (list to be provided) and easels.  Tables are available for those who wish to sit.
